A new registry operator has entered the ICANN new generic top-level domain (gTLD) program with an ambitious portfolio of applications. Link Freedom Group (LFG), which owns the existing .link registry, has revealed more than 300 strings it applied for in the latest expansion round. The move represents a significant investment in the domain namespace, with application fees alone exceeding $68 million at ICANN’s $227,000 per-string rate.

What was submitted

LFG’s applications cover a broad range of categories, reflecting both commercial and cultural trends. The disclosed strings include:

  • AI and technology: .api, .agi, .gpt, .labs
  • Commerce: .order, .cart, .retail
  • Crypto and Web3: .hodl, .invest, .nft, .token, .btc, .coin
  • Lifestyle and culture: .lfg, .goat, .tldr, .vibe, .god, .zen
  • Web infrastructure: .bit, .platform, .gear, .core

The company also applied for domains consisting of three repeating letters, such as .iii and .rrr. Notably absent from its list are .agent and .crypto, which face heavy competition, though LFG pursued adjacent alternatives like .agentic and .block.

Background

Background: ICANN’s new gTLD program allows organizations to apply for custom top-level domains, expanding beyond traditional extensions like .com and .net. Previous rounds have seen contention for high-value strings, resolved through auctions or private negotiations. The current round is the first since 2012, with thousands of applications expected from registries worldwide.

Contention and strategy

Several of LFG’s chosen strings are likely to face competition from other applicants. Strings like .api, .hub, .labs, .btc, and .gpt are considered high-value targets, with contention sets expected to drive up costs through auctions. LFG’s decision to avoid .crypto while applying for .btc and .coin suggests a strategic focus on crypto-adjacent names rather than direct competition in crowded segments.

Vaughn Liley, CEO of Link Freedom Group, framed the applications as part of a broader mission to modernize internet identity. In a statement, Liley said:

"Digital identity has become fundamental to how people communicate, work and participate online, yet users still don’t truly own their place on the internet. From email addresses and social media profiles to personal websites, much of our online presence ultimately exists at the discretion of someone else. We believe the internet’s namespace should reflect how people use the web today, and our mission is to modernize how internet identity works."

The company’s acronym, LFG, is itself among the applied-for strings, alongside a dedicated website at lfg.link where the full list of applications is published.

Financial and operational implications

The financial commitment for LFG is substantial. With over 300 applications at $227,000 each, the base cost exceeds $68 million before accounting for contention auctions, which could add tens of millions more. The company’s existing registry, Nova Registry, operates the .link TLD, providing operational experience that may mitigate some risks associated with launching new extensions.

For industry professionals, the applications signal growing interest in niche and utility-focused TLDs. The inclusion of AI-related strings like .gpt and .agi reflects the sector’s rapid evolution, while crypto-adjacent names suggest continued demand for blockchain-related digital assets. However, the success of these TLDs will depend on adoption by registrars and end-users, as well as ICANN’s evaluation and delegation timeline.

For professionals

For professionals: Registrars should monitor contention sets for high-value strings like .api and .gpt, as auction outcomes may influence pricing and availability. Operators of existing TLDs in overlapping categories (e.g., .ai, .io) may face new competition, particularly in developer and tech-focused segments.

What to watch

The next phase of the ICANN process will involve public comment periods, evaluation of applications, and resolution of contention sets. LFG’s portfolio will likely face scrutiny from both ICANN and competing applicants, particularly for strings with broad commercial appeal. The timeline for delegation remains uncertain, but industry observers expect the first new gTLDs from this round to launch in late 2027 or early 2028.

The company’s decision to disclose its applications publicly may also influence other applicants to follow suit, increasing transparency in a process historically dominated by private negotiations. How LFG navigates contention auctions and marketing for its new TLDs will be closely watched as a case study for registry strategy in the current round.
