MongoDB users will soon be able to deploy FIPS 140-3 validated cryptography without altering their database or application code. The integration relies on wolfProvider, a cryptographic module developed by wolfSSL, which is currently undergoing laboratory validation to confirm compatibility with MongoDB’s document-oriented database platform.

The approach is designed to minimize disruption. Provided applications already use FIPS-approved algorithms, the transition to validated cryptography should require no code changes. wolfSSL expects to publish a technical implementation guide once validation is complete, offering step-by-step instructions for integration.

How the integration works

wolfProvider acts as a middleware layer between MongoDB and wolfCrypt, wolfSSL’s FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic library. By leveraging this module, MongoDB can offload cryptographic operations to a certified implementation while maintaining its existing API. This means developers can continue using familiar MongoDB queries and data models without rewriting their applications to comply with federal or industry-specific security standards.

The validation process is still in progress, with wolfSSL conducting lab tests to ensure seamless operation. Once completed, the company plans to release a detailed blog post outlining the integration process, including any configuration adjustments that may be necessary for specific use cases.

Why compliance matters

FIPS 140-3 is a U.S. government standard for cryptographic modules, widely adopted across regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, and defense. Organizations subject to federal compliance requirements—including those handling sensitive data under FedRAMP, HIPAA, or CMMC—often mandate the use of FIPS-validated cryptography. By integrating wolfProvider, MongoDB aims to simplify compliance for enterprises operating in these sectors.

For developers, the integration could reduce the overhead associated with meeting security mandates. Rather than building custom cryptographic solutions or waiting for MongoDB to pursue its own FIPS validation, teams can adopt wolfProvider as a drop-in replacement, accelerating deployment timelines for regulated workloads.

What to watch

The timeline for general availability remains unclear. wolfSSL has not specified when the validation process will conclude or when the integration guide will be published. Users interested in early access can contact wolfSSL directly for updates or technical support. Meanwhile, organizations evaluating MongoDB for regulated environments may need to weigh the benefits of this integration against alternative solutions, such as database-native encryption or third-party security modules already certified under FIPS 140-3.

Background

Background: FIPS 140-3 is the latest iteration of the U.S. Federal Information Processing Standard for cryptographic modules, replacing FIPS 140-2 in 2019. It defines security requirements for hardware and software components used to protect sensitive data, with validation conducted by accredited laboratories. MongoDB is a widely used NoSQL database platform, particularly in cloud-native and microservices architectures.
