OVHcloud has introduced a managed backup service within its public cloud, leveraging Plakar’s technology to protect virtual machines, Kubernetes clusters, databases, file systems, and AI workloads. The service is designed to simplify backup operations by integrating protection directly into the cloud platform, while allowing customers to retain control of encryption keys and restore data outside OVHcloud’s infrastructure.

The integration addresses a persistent challenge in cloud infrastructure: the fragmentation of backup tools across different workload types. Enterprises often deploy separate products for virtual machines, containers, databases, and AI systems, each with distinct storage targets and operational procedures. By absorbing these functions into the platform, OVHcloud aims to reduce the complexity of managing multiple backup solutions, though it also shifts operational accountability to the provider.

How the service works

Plakar’s underlying technology creates immutable, deduplicated, and compressed snapshots that are encrypted end-to-end. Customers hold the encryption keys, ensuring the provider cannot access protected data. Backup copies are stored within Europe, aligning with sovereignty requirements for customers concerned about data residency. The service also supports portable recovery, allowing workloads to be restored outside OVHcloud, which could mitigate risks during provider outages or migration projects.

However, portability has limits. While the service can restore datasets, recovering a fully functional application requires additional components, such as networking, identity systems, secrets, configurations, and external services. Kubernetes and AI workloads introduce further complexity, as they depend on cluster configurations, persistent data, and specialized infrastructure. The announcement does not specify recovery point objectives (RPOs), recovery time objectives (RTOs), or performance benchmarks for large-scale environments, leaving questions about real-world effectiveness during outages.

Background: Plakar is an open-source backup technology designed for immutability and deduplication, supporting diverse workloads through a unified architecture. OVHcloud, a European cloud provider, operates data centers across multiple regions and emphasizes data sovereignty and control.

Operational and compliance considerations

The service’s European data residency and customer-controlled encryption keys may help address sovereignty and compliance concerns, particularly for organizations handling sensitive data. However, regulatory compliance extends beyond backup location. Retention schedules, administrator access, encryption practices, and recovery procedures all influence whether a deployment meets regulatory requirements. Customers must also manage encryption keys carefully—losing them could render backups inaccessible, as the provider does not hold decryption paths.

Support and accountability present another challenge. When a restore fails, customers must determine whether the issue lies with OVHcloud, Plakar, the application configuration, or the destination infrastructure. Native services often promise simplified operations, but if troubleshooting still requires diagnosing multiple layers, some of the expected benefits may not materialize.

Pricing will also play a critical role. While native backup can reduce tooling costs, it may increase storage consumption, transfer charges, or long-term platform spending. Enterprises will need to evaluate the total cost of recovery, not just the price of backup capacity.

Workload diversity and standardization

Plakar’s broad coverage—spanning file systems, virtual machines, Kubernetes, databases, and AI workloads—aims to reduce the need for multiple backup products. Consolidation could lower software overhead and operational costs, but standardization has limits. Databases require transactional consistency, Kubernetes recovery involves cluster state and persistent data, and AI environments often deal with massive datasets where restoration time becomes a bottleneck.

The service’s success will depend on demonstrating repeatable recovery across these diverse workloads. Enterprises will need to test recovery performance, portability, and access controls to assess whether the integration delivers genuine operational simplification or merely shifts complexity.
